About Us

Founded in 1953 Gael Linn is a national organisation whose principal aim is to foster and promote the Irish language and its heritage as a living language and as an expression of identity at policy and at community level. Gael Linn operates on an all-island basis, with offices in Dublin and Armagh.

Lead Organisation
In 2014, Gael Linn was designated as one of six ‘lead organisation’ to be core-funded by Foras na Gaeilge. Our range of functions in this regard include:
·  The teaching of Irish as a subject- research and actions regarding the policies being pursued, the support provided for teachers and the availibilty of resources.
·  Irish learning by adults-to promote the provision of quality courses and resources.
·  Promotion of spoken Irish among students through:
o   Gaelbhratach (Irish Flag) scheme for schools
         o   Irish-speaking school-based networks
         o   organising and co-ordinating extra-curricular activities

Our direct work with young people and adults in promoting Irish is supported by professional expertise in the areas of finance and corporate governance, IT, HR, advocacy and fundraising.

We are an organisation with an annual income of approximately €3.5 million. In 2013 voluntary income accounted for 28% of our total income, while statutory income comprised 29%.  The remainder of our income was generated by fees for the provision of Irish language services and by investment income.
