Based on the general guidelines and restrictions in place throughout the country since March and in conjunction with advice from the Health Service Executive and the Department of Heritage, Culture and the Gaeltacht, Gael Linn has taken the difficult decision to cancel our adult courses that were due to take place in Gaoth Dobhair this summer.
We realise that a stay in the Gaeltacht is a big part of a learner's experience and that this decision will cause disappointment. We must however make the well-being and safety of course participants and others our priority. Since March, group gatherings of any description have been banned and social and physical distancing has been and will remain to be the focus for some time.
Gael Linn recognises that this is a stressful period for families. We know also that many people are under financial pressure at this particular time and therefore Gael Linn will fully reimburse all deposits and fees paid. We look forward to welcoming participants back to Gaoth Dobhair in 2021.
You may of course use your deposit and any fees paid to date as payment towards a course in 2021. In doing so 2020 fees will be applied for 2021 courses. Please inform Gael Linn and this can be arranged.
We would like to thank all for their continued support and for choosing Cúrsaí Gaeltachta Gael Linn. Wishing all health and every blessing at this time and in the coming months.
Gael Linn’s Gaeltacht courses for adults are held in Gaoth Dobhair, Co. Donegal, which is one of the largest Irish-speaking areas in the country. The classes take place in Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge
(or 'Ionad na hOllscoile' according to Google Maps). The area is one of outstanding natural beauty, surrounded by the Derryveagh Mountains, the most majestic of which is Errigal. Some of the finest beaches in Ireland are to be found in Gaoth Dobhair.
The courses run Sunday to Saturday. Irish language classes are held each day starting at 9.30a.m. until 3.00p.m, and the course concludes at 1.00 p.m. on the Saturday. One of the aims of the course is to show that the Irish language is vibrant and relevant to all aspects of modern life. There will be a varied evening programme of lectures, poetry-readings, table-quiz, céilí etc and information will be available about cultural events taking place in the vicinity.
Typically there are 4 levels on each course and we try to cater to all levels:
1) New to Gaeilge: complete beginners, for people who have never learned Irish or have very little knowledge of the language.
2) Cúpla Focal: for anyone who has studied Irish before, still at a basic level but have some phrases.
3) Intermediate: for anyone looking to improve on confidence speaking, increases vocab and have a decent understanding of Irish.
4) Advanced: anyone who has a very good grasp on the language and is looking to focus improving grammar and vocab at a high standard.
Course participants make their own accommodation arrangements. Gael Linn can supply a list of local hotels and guest houses.
