Comórtas Oráide an Phiarsaigh

Overview

Comórtas Óráide an Phiarsaigh 2021.

As you will all understand, it is not possible for debating teams to congregate for competitions as things stand at the moment because of Covid-19. We would also deem it unfair to be placing extra pressure on teachers to travel to these competitions at this time. In order to find a realistic solution, it is our aim to run Comórtas an Phiarsaigh as an online Public Speaking Competition for this year only (2020/2021). This will be an individual competition and entries will be accepted by submitting a three or four minute video on a certain topic.

The Aim of the Competition
The main aim of the competition is to give young people the experience in speaking Irish. This competition is for individual speakers and entries will be submitted in video format. Gael Linn will provide a list of 5 topics and the speaker will discuss his/her chosen topic from that list. We suggest teachers entering teams could avail of the opportunity to involve the whole class. This could be done in various ways:

  • putting the whole class to work researching the motion for debate and having a class discussion
  • making the motion the subject of a class essay and having a class discussion on the various points raised in the essays
  • encouraging the class to record their own speech

Entry

Read all the rules carefully here. Click REGISTER NOW at the top of the page and follow the instructions to complete the form and submit it online. The closing date for entries is 6 November 2020 but video entries will not need to be submitted until later. There will be a €5 fee to register a student.

If you have any further queries please contact Tomás Ó Cadhla at tomasrua@gael-linn.ie or 087 7474927.

General Rules
1. The competition is open to post primary schools excluding gaelcholáistí and gaeltacht schools. (For schools with an Irish stream, if students who are not in the Irish stream are selected to speak, those students can take part in the competition).

2. The competition is divided into a junior section and a senior section.

3. The junior section is open to Junior Certificate Students.

4. The senior section is open to Leaving Certificate and Transition Year students.

5. A school may enter no more than three junior and/or three senior speakers.

6. An entry fee of €5.00 is payable for each participant. Each participant must register online at the top of this page, no later than the 6 November 2020. Payment is made at time of registration where possible, but invoices can be issued where required.

7. The adjudicators decision is final at each stage of the competition.

Qualifying rounds

·      This is a competition for individual speakers, and all entries for the first round will be sent to us as a video of the speaker discussing a topic he/she has chosen from a list of 5 topics provided by Gael Linn. Junior and Senior students will be given different topics.

·      The speakers will be divided into groups of eight (Junior and Senior). These videos will be sent out to an adjudicator and this adjudicator will pick a certain number from the eight to advance to the next round (The number that goes forward depends on the number of entries we have).

·      This will continue until eight are selected in each region (Junior and Senior) to compete in 4 regional finals. These regional finals will be live streamed on Gael Linn’s Facebook page and two speakers from each region will be selected to compete in the All-Ireland Final (Junior and Senior).

·      The All-Ireland Final will be live streamed on Gael Linn’s Facebook page.

Time

Speakers will have a maximum of 3 minutes at junior level and 4 minutes at senior level.
