Overview
Gael Linn is involved in a number of ventures designed to bring together pupils from Gaeltacht schools and Gaelscoileanna in an Irish-speaking environment.
These festivals, two in Munster and one in each of the other provinces, are organised in Gaeltacht areas in May or June each year and cater for teams from Gaelscoileanna and Gaeltacht national schools. The festivals take place over two days with 8 teams competing. Schools may be required to take part in qualifying games.
Rules
All players must be attending primary school.
Teams consist of nine players, but up to 18 players are allowed on the panel.
All teams are mixed and at least 4 girls must be playing at all times during games.
Games are of 24 minutes duration.
One hop and one solo, or two solos are allowed.
The ball may be lifted off the ground.
All free kicks, 45's, kickouts and sideline kicks may be taken from the hand.
No square is used and therefore there are no penalties.
Games are played across the pitch (approx. 85 metres).
Participating Teams
Eight teams participate in each event [2 groups of 4 teams, thus guaranteeing at least 3 games per team]
Fees
€25 per child for those staying overnight, otherwise €7.50 per child. Gael Linn covers all costs including accommodation, food, prizes etc. We cover 50% of the travel costs. Schools taking part may bring up to 18 children to the festivals.
Prizes
The winning teams at the festivals are presented with the Gael Linn Perpetual Cup. The members of both the winning teams and the runners-up receive medals.
Other Activities
As well as the football the children take part in other activities such as a Tablequiz/Concert/Céilí.
