Post Primary

Gaelbhratach (Post-Primary)

Gaelbhratach is a scheme designed to encourage both Primary and Secondary schools, it is
funded by Foras na Gaeilge and the Dept. of Education and Skills and organised by Gael Linn
(With support from Conradh na Gaeilge & Glór na nGael)

Gaelbhratach is a support scheme for schools of all types across Ireland. Gaelbhratach focuses on the promotion of Irish in a structured, planned and enjoyable way in both primary and secondary schools.

The goal of the Gaelbhratach scheme is to inspire the use of Irish, not only within the classroom, but also as a spoken language of the school community. Emphasis is placed upon communicative Irish and the importance of language awareness as a means of learning for children in particular. A Gaelbhratach is duly awarded in recognition of the schools' efforts.

Scheme Vision for Primary Schools

  • To foster respect for the Irish language throughout the school
  • To teach the Irish language through the medium of Irish
  • To use the Primary School Curriculum to teach conversational Irish that serves the needs of the children
  • To enable the pupils to use with confidence the Irish they learn, in order to communicate with each other, within the school community and the wider community

Scheme Vision for Secondary Schools

  • To foster respect for the Irish language throughout the school
  • To teach the Irish language through the medium of Irish
  • To enable the children to use the Irish they learn with confidence, in order to communicate with each other, within the school community, and the wider community.
  • To support teachers in their work with the scheme.
  • To encourage and enable second level schools to be active in the promotion of the use of Irish within the school itself and beyond in a planned, consistent and enjoyable way.

Gael Linn is grateful to Conradh na Gaeilge and Glór na nGael for their part in the running of the scheme. Between the two levels, there are over 150 schools around the country taking part in the pilot scheme. We will be inviting a number of new schools to take part each year from now on.
