Buaiteoirí Bréagchúirt Uí Dhálaigh 2020!

The Irish language moot court, Bréagchúirt Uí Dhálaigh, took place as a virtual event on Zoom on Friday last, 6 November with Cormac Ó Dúlacháin S.C, Daithí Mac Cárthaigh B.L., Alice Maguire-Spencer B.L., presiding over the final from the Gael Linn Office in Dublin. First prize went to the team from DCU who overcame the team from King’s Inns  .

This long-standing event is organized annually by Gael Linn in memory of the late Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh, former President and Chief Justice of Ireland.  The competition, in normal times, gives third level law students an opportunity to display their advocacy skills through Irish in an authentic courtroom setting.

Competing this year were students from NUIG, UCC, DCU, UCD and Kings Inns. Preliminary rounds were held online on Friday morning, and the teams from Dublin City University and Kings Inns were chosen to progress to the final.

The delighted winners Caoimhe Ní Choimín, Róisín Ní Mhadaoin, Cian Ó Bolgair Ó hAodh and Daithí Nesbitt who argued the case for the Appelant in the final, received a cheque for €600 along with the Gael Linn Perpetual Trophy, while the runners-up Aoife Nic Chraith, Sorcha Dianamh Ní Néill Fulham, Seána Davey and Deirdre Donnelly on the side of the Respondent, received a cheque for €300.

Having congratulated all the participants, Seán Ó Ceallaigh of Gael Linn then thanked the judges for their support of the competition and also thanked barristers Kate Ní Chonfhaola and Alice Maguire-Spencer, who helped organize this year’s event. He said Gael Linn hopes to return to Kings Inns and The Courts Service's excellent facilities for the competition next year.
