The passing of Seán Ó Sé

The Board and staff of Gael Linn are deeply saddened by the passing of Seán Ó Sé, one of the country’s finest and most renowned traditional singers.

Wayne Mac Feilimí, Chairman of the Board of Gael Linn, said, ‘Seán Ó Sé had a profound impact on Irish music. He was a man of immense talent as a singer and performer. We are deeply indebted to him for his loyalty to the organisation and for the great wealth of songwriting he left as a legacy to the Irish people.’

He was renowned for his singing with Seán Ó Riada and Ceoltóirí Chualann and his lively version of the song An Poc ar Buile which he recorded on the Gael Linn label in 1962 was greatly appreciated by the Irish public.

He was the singer for the iconic Ó Riada concert at the Gaiety in 1969, for which Gael Linn released a live recording on an album which is still very popular.

Seán’s association with Gael Linn continued for over three decades. He performed many concerts for the organisation. On 24 March 2023, he captivated the audience when he sang accompanied by his old friend Peadar Ó Riada at the Sugar Club in Dublin to celebrate Gael Linn’s 70th anniversary.

Seán is greatly loved and respected by everyone in the organisation. He was a great company man and had a story for everyone and every song. He was full of energy and had a great intellect.

The Board and staff of Gael Linn extend their heartfelt condolences to all his family and friends at this sad time. May his soul rest in peace.
